Hear that? That’s the knell for Full HD TVs. While clever marketing has taught us that a 1080p TV is the next best thing since Nutella, TV manufacturers have been active for long scheming plans to ruin your party and make you feel your AED 20,000 TV is going to be worthless soon. I boldly predict 1080p is going to be obsolete in the next 3 years, with higher resolution TVs commanding how we consume entertainment. Taking the first baby steps in that direction is Sony, who unveiled their new 84-inch Bravia XBR-84X900 4K resolution TV yesterday at IFA. Now, a 4K resolution TV is sort of pointless at the moment – there is only one movie in that format – so Sony has included an X-Reality Pro picture engine that upscales all content to the highest resolution. The TV also packs in edge-lit LEDs, a separate 50W 10-uint stereo speaker system, and Passive 3D technology, making it the first passive 3D TV from the company. The announcement comes shortly after rumors of the PlayStation 4 supporting the 4K resolution. It seems manufacturers will once again use home consoles to push their new tech into the market, which should be lapped up if the price is right. But at the moment, bringing home one of these beasts will cost a ton of money. Sony has priced the XBR-84X900 at 25,000 euros (approx., $31,000 or AED 120,000). There is no release date yet.
