It is expected that the ViewPad 4 smartphone of ViewSonic will come preloaded with Android 2.4 operating system. Although Google did not respond to comment, there are still several implications about the news. Still the appearance of an Android 2.4 smartphone in April can lead to doubt on the current Android 2.3 build. It is suggested by Pocket Lint’s source, the launch of Android 2.4 is accelerated in order to be sure that dual-core applications developed for Android 3.0 will also be able to work on handsets based on Android 2.4. According to reports, Android 2.4 will be called Gingerbread, which can be regarded as a tacit admission of Google that covers the inability of Android 2.3 to provide support for dual-core applications. But still it can be part of Google’s plan to port dual-core functionality from Android 3.0. In fact, such a move will be welcomed by many developers who create dual-core apps. From the other hand the move throws the spotlight in the Android fragmentation issue. Developers come across challenges to write apps for platforms that offer ground to the next build. According to Phandroid, Google is working on a new branch of code, known as GRI17, due to which the capabilities of Honeycomb will be carried to phones. The ViewSonic’s ViewPad 4 was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011. The smartphone will feature a 4.1-inch WVGA touch capacitive screen. It will be powered by a Qualcomm MSM 8255, 1GHz chip. The smartphone will be able to compete with the Droid Bionic, Motorola Droid Atrix 4G, Kyocera Echo as well as other Android based handsets. It will be also supportive to HD 720p video recording, upload, playback, as well as HDMI 720p display output.
